The six Boards, Departments and Offices that make-up the California Environmental Protection Agency (Cal/EPA) have legislative authority to protect public health and safety, to restore and enhance our environment thus ensuring that California enjoys a clean, safe and healthy environment now and for future generations.

Cal/EPA Boards, Departments and Offices:

    • The Air Resources Board regulates sources of air pollution to protect the public from exposure of toxic air contaminants.
    • The Department of Pesticide Regulation protects public safety by regulating the registration, sale and use of pesticides.
    • The Department of Toxic Substances Control is responsible to protect the environment and the public from exposures to hazardous wastes through regulation and overseeing cleanup of hazardous material sites.
    • The Integrated Waste Management regulates the processing and disposal of solid waste and landfills to protect human health and the environment.
    • The Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) is responsible for developing and providing state and local government agencies with scientific information detailing the effects that environmental hazards have on public health and the environment.
    • The State Water Resources Control Board protects and regulates California 's water resources including assessing water quality, regulating wastewater discharge and monitoring irrigation and storm water run-off.

Cal/EPA is responsible for not only creating and protecting California environmental laws and regulations but also the enforcement activities of the law.
